Sensory Sunday Activities

Over the last few months we have been sharing a fun sensory activity with our social media followers every Sunday. Its been a huge hit - so we are going to put them all together here for easy reference. Enjoy!

Sensory Room Lighting

Children will love turning the blocks in their hands to see which colour they will change to next. The blocks change colour when turned on a different side Perfect for using ICT to learn sequencing.

Equally, incorporate them into other construction resources to add excitement and increase engagement with ICT. Wonderful when combined with natural or see-through bricks to create a light up igloo or a coloured window.

Each cube is powered by 2xAA batteries. Set contains 4 x 15cm cubes and 8 x 7.5cm cubes. Suitable from birth.

Beach Sensory Play

A beach small world is a wonderful place for pretend play and sensory exploration.

What you need

  • Sand

  • Shells

  • Water

  • Glass beads

  • Small pieces of drift wood

  • Large bin or water table

Colour sorting sensory bag

Using a ziploc bag, Insert two colours of buttons and a large squirt of hair gel and tape it to a table.

Add sorting ‘sections’ for each colour.

Draw on the baggies with permanent markers. Big circles in the corresponding colours of buttons, and write the name of the colours as well.

The child can then push the buttons around in the baggy to fit into the correctly coloured circles.

Blow Pom Poms along the Line

Tape some fun lines on the floor in three different colours.

A blue zig zag line. A red curvy line. And one straight line in green.

Use pom poms in corresponding colours to the tape. Blow the pom poms down the line with a straw.

Try your best keeping the pom pom on the line all the way to the end.

Its really harder than you think! Join them! Have pom pom races!

Touch and Feel balloons

Fill balloons with different textures for an awesome sensory activity - We found this awesome idea on here

Shaving cream sensory play

It's quick, inexpensive, and so much fun!

Spray some shaving cream onto a tray, then fill a few dopplers with different food dye.

Help your child to squirt a little of the dye into the shaving cream to create a rainbow effect.

Sensory Play board

You don't need a wooden board to create a Sensory play board. Use card instead and items you have around the house.

Touch and Feel frames

Using a hot glue gun attach each material to the back board of each frame and then pop it back in as if it were just a normal photo (without the glass).

You can either glue the frames to a piece of MDF or keep them lose to be able to lay out just a few frames at a time.

Sensory Walkway

Sensory walk made out of plastic breadboards and glue. These boards are covered with fine sandpaper, scrubbing sponges, foamy material used to keep rugs from slipping, a mop and flat glass stones.

Touch and Feel sensory sticks

The idea for the touch and feel sensory sticks came from observing children and realising how intrigued they became when they touched something soft, rough, or smooth, for example. The stick part of the creation keep things portable (dr. offices, airports, cars, etc.) and simple – with a toddler’s short attention span its good to keep set-up time to a minimum.

Fine Motor Skills

Fine motor skills are the coordination of small muscle movements, which occur in the fingers usually in coordination with the eyes.

Abilities that involve the use of hands develop over time, starting with primitive gestures such as grabbing at objects to more precise activities that involve precise eye–hand coordination. Fine motor skills are skills that involve a refined use of the small muscles controlling the hand, fingers, and thumb. The development of these skills allows one to be able to complete tasks such as writing, drawing, and buttoning.

Touch and Feel Nursery Rhyme board

Fun, colourful and tactile touch and feel board is ideal for parents and children to read and sing together.

This charming retelling of a well-known nursery rhyme is beautifully handcrafted and has different textures for little hands to grab and explore.

Sensory Hula Hoop

A great Sensory toy you can make at home! Wrap different textures around a hula hoop! Endless hours of fun!

Pet Sensory activity - Wash the dog

Sensory play is a wonderful way for kids to explore and learn about the world around them. It’s the perfect way to invite them to learn using their senses, engage in imaginary play, and even learn some life skills along the way.

Materials:

  • Two plastic containers

  • Mud

  • Bubble bath

  • Cleaning supplies (towels, sponges, tooth brush, etc)

  • Dog figures ( or other animal figures)
