Reiki and its benefits for children

Our CEO at The Sensory Child is a qualified Reiki practitioner.

We have mentioned Reiki in a previous post:

Relaxation techniques for an over stimulated child blog and we would like to expand into the subject and why it is a benefit to children with sensory issues.

Reiki is a stress release for the parent and a relaxation technique for the child

What is Reiki?

Reiki originates from Japan and was first developed in 1922 by a Japanese Buddhist Mikeo Usul.

The word Reiki is made up of two Japanese words – Rei – which means “God’s wisdom or the higher power’ and Ki which means “life force energy”. Putting the words together creates the meaning spiritually guided life force energy.

Reiki is a healing technique based on the principle that the therapist can channel energy into the patient by means of touch, to activate the natural healing process of the patient’s body and restore physical and emotional well-being.

What happens during a Reiki session?

A Reiki treatment follows a traditional pattern of hand positions, resting without pressure on or above the body.

In an adults session you remain fully clothed and lie down on a massage table. The room is warm and comfortable with gentle music in the background, with candles or intense burning. A session lasts between 60 to 90 minutes. Due to its gentle nature, many people fall asleep during this soothing experience of healing.

In a child’s session there is no set protocol or length of time. Reiki can be administered by anyone who has training, which could be a professional practitioner, a healthcare provider, a family member or even yourself, if you have been trained.

Moreover, there is no typical setting. A quiet place is preferable, but Reiki can be done anywhere, no matter what else is happening either around or directly to the child.

This is why Reiki is excellent for children who are always on the go. I find that my children benefit from it the most just after the bath, in their cozy Pj’s settled down before bedtime. They enjoy looking at my crystals and we listening to smoothing music. They both comment on how hot my hands become and say they feel sleepy.

I use Chakra Crystal healing along side my Reiki treatments. Crystals have a natural healing frequency that can be activated to contribute to moving or balancing energy around them.

What does Reiki heal and how does it work?

Reiki can be applied to any part of the body, injury or illness. It also has a calming effect on the mind and emotions. On a physical level, Reiki can be applied to the physical body, including all of the conditions that concern the body; anything from a headache, a broken bone or sore muscles.

On the emotional level, Reiki has the ability to soothe and pacify negative emotions whether it is anger, fear or anxiety.

Perhaps the best way to describe Reiki is to consider our bodies much like forms of energy and light. The way we interact with our environment and with others, as well as our actions, thoughts and established patterns, all determine the harmonious function of our energy body.

Reiki has an ability to heal as a subtle energy matrix. Each of us has a specific vibrational rate. Due to previous actions or karma, this vibrational rate becomes out of tune. When this happens the result is illness. Reiki thereby works by re-attuning our body’s own vibrational rate to that of a healthy and harmonious vibration.

Is Reiki safe?

Reiki is one of the most non-invasive, low impact and safest healing method available.

This is because receiving a treatment involves no manipulation of the physical body. The practitioner simply places their hands gently on or over the body and the transference of healing energy passes from the practitioner’s hands to the recipient, bringing about a calm and serene experience for both the giver and the receiver.

Reiki can supplement other therapies without any side effects or getting in the way of either conventional or alternative treatments such as medication therapy prescribed by a medical doctor.

Reiki is NOT a cure but it may help with many symptoms of a disability, sensory issues or stress.

How your child might feel after a treatment?

Most people feel refreshed and energized much like someone who has had a good night’s sleep.

If a physical condition has been the priority of the session then they will more often than not feel sensations surrounding the treatment of the physical alignment, such as a decrease in pain.

Other experiences may be that the child will feel emotional, nurtured, secure and happy.

The reasons for these different experiences are in direct correlation to the Reiki treatment. Very often the effects of a treatment can continue for hours or days after an initial session.

How to get treatment for your child?

The Sensory Child would recommend the child’s parents receive a Reiki attunement from a qualified Reiki Master in order to give Reiki to their children. Reiki may empower the parent and give them a way to help their child.
